Amberjacks taphouse

0

The other night both J and I were in one of those moods where we had no idea what to eat. I didn’t know what to cook and time was ticking away. It got to the point and if I did actually cook we wouldn’t have been eating for hours so we decided to just go out. Neither of us was feeling adventurous and wanted to just stick close by so we went over to Amberjacks pub.

Amberjacks pub is located at 9850 King George Blvd, at the bottom of compassion point inn. Now perhaps we were in an adventurous mood after all because I don’t know a lot of people who would have agreed to go here to see Surrey’s finest.  Their website shows an older pub but the photos really make it look much nicer than it actually is. It also doesn’t mention the sky train riff raff that occasionally make an appearance. Despite the location we decided to stick around and eat.

J ordered the Cadillac chicken sandwich which is a grilled Cajun chicken breast, with jack cheese, bacon, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion on a ciabatta bun. He has asked for salad, but as you can see he has fries on his plate. He said the sandwich was your typical chicken burger and didn’t really wow him.  He didn’t notice the guacamole at all.

I ordered a steak sandwich and fries. I had changed my mind and requested Cajun fries after we ordered and this confused the server so J ended up with my fries and I had regular fries on my plate. My steak also had about 4 onion rings on top as a garnish. Regular fried onions probably would have been better but regardless it was something extra. The streak was cooked perfectly and placed on a piece of garlic toast. The garlic toast was really nothing special. I think if they upgraded the toast it would have been much better. The fries were fries, no complaints. The Cajun fries on the other hand weren’t Cajun in my opinion and tasted more like BBQ popcorn seasoning. It was sweet and not spicy.

I am pretty sure we won’t be back. Nothing in particular was terrible but it wasn’t good either and I would much prefer to just go somewhere that has a better menu and atmosphere.

Bison Burgers with Chipotle Mayo, Bacon and fried Onions

2

I don’t know if it’s been the bad weather lately or if it’s just flying by but I am beginning to feel like summer is running out. I feel like I have hardly taken advantage of patio life and bbq’ing. Even though that’s not entirely true I really feel like I need to make the effort to get grilling more! With the sun peaking out of the clouds this morning it gave me the motivation to come up with a bbq plan for tonight.

I took a quick trip to Heritage meats in Langley (19689 Willowbrook Drive) since they have the best selection of meat around. I found several varieties of meats, burgers, ribs and steaks from your regular beef to more of an exotic kind. I played it safe and purchased bison burgers. Bison is a little richer in flavour then beef and also healthier. It has less fat and cholesterol with more protein then chicken. Don’t worry though, I counteracted that with bacon.

I didn’t need to season the meat much before grilling; just a light sprinkle of steak spice was fine. Also putting the patties on high heat will make sure they don’t stick but turn the temp down right away because bison cooks faster than beef.

I topped my burgers with a chipotle mayo that I made with a chipotle sauce I purchased in Mexico. You could also make this with canned chipotle peppers, mayo and lime. I also added lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions bacon and cheddar as well.  These burgers came out really flavourful, juicy and delicious!!

The Haney public house

2

On Saturday after work J and I took a trip out to Maple Ridge to look at some houses. Once we were done we both realized that all this excitement sure made us hungry. We don’t really know the area that well so we stuck to the main roads and looked for places to eat. We were coming up to the old Tommy’s Bar and Grill and realized it’s now a new restaurant, The Haney public house. We decided to give it a shot to see how much it has changed. They definitely remodelled the inside with new carpets, wood flooring, furniture, and revamped the smoking area to be a part of the restaurant. It’s located at 22222 Lougheed Highway. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have a patio since it was so beautiful outside but at this point my stomach was in charge and eating food is what needed to happen.

Since it used to be a night club before its very large and open inside. They didn’t greet us at the front door, this is probably because the bar and waitress station is on the other side of the restaurant. We sat ourselves in one of the booths and a man came over right away with menus and welcomed us. Saturdays featured half price appies, and pints of Canadian for 3.75. There was also steak and prawns on special as well for 10.95 which J immediately jumped on.  I kind of wanted to try the steak bites as an appy but we got chilli chicken instead because J didn’t want double steak. I ordered “the haney” beef dip with Caesar salad.

The chilli chicken came in less than 10 min and was pretty much your typical chilli chicken except that it didn’t have a thick coating on it. I actually really liked it without any coating on it because I knew I was eating real chicken. The only strange thing was that we didn’t get any cutlery. The chilli chicken was served with tooth picks and that is what we ate it with. I didn’t really like that; I prefer eating with a fork.

Our meals came and I immediately noticed the large prawns on J’s plate. They were a really good size and rested on top of his steak. He also had salad, mashed potatoes and gravy. The potatoes looked pretty smooth so I had to ask if they were boxed or real and thankfully they were real potatoes. He was also nice enough to let me try the prawns and they were cooked perfectly; still slightly juicy, not overcooked or rubbery.

Mine looked like your typical beef dip. They claim that they make the roast on site and thinly slice it specifically for these sandwiches. There were also mushrooms, fried onions and cheese on the sandwich. The sandwich seemed small at first but with the overloaded meat and toppings it was the perfect amount of food. The beef was also delicious and you could tell it wasn’t processed roast beef.  The au jus was also good, not too salty and a good flavour.

For pub food I was really impressed and the prices were great. I really wish they had a patio and that would be the one thing that would hold me back from coming here in the summer. For most people this pub is pretty far away, but if you’re in the area I would give it a shot!

National Hotdog Day!

1

July is hot dog month and this probably has to do with summer being here, bbq’ing, camping, and picnicking on the rise. Today was national hotdog day so naturally I had to take advantage of this joyous occasion by celebrating with bbq’ing my very own hot dogs.

Now, nobody really knows the origin of the original hot dog but the Germans claim it was them and the people of Vienna think it’s them. Either way, someone over there created the hot dog and North Americans eat them like they’re going out of style.

The hot dog vendors downtown are hard to ignore, and I can barely resist the aroma wafting through the air. Japa dog has also gained popularity by created Japanese style hotdogs loaded with all kinds of toppings.  With some stiff competition I had to create some of my own gourmet hotdogs.

I went to the store and picked up some Angus beef ball park hot dogs, thin style hotdog buns and a few other ingredients to create some international hotdogs on national hotdog day.

The first one I made was the Ukrainian hotdog and topped it with a sour cream and chive dressing, mustard, sauerkraut, cheddar cheese, bacon, and fried onions. I absolutely loved this one because I could still taste the hotdog, the crunch of the bacon added a smoky pork flavour, and the sauerkraut and onions was a tart sweet taste that complimented the hint of sour cream. The second hotdog was a Mexican dog. This one has a large spreading of guacamole, cheddar cheese, sliced tomato, jalapenos and salsa. I love Mexican and guacamole and salsa are some of my favourite condiments. I thought these condiments on a hot dog were great. J thought it tasted like a hot dog taco and preferred the Ukrainian dog a bit better. I couldn’t decide which I liked better, they were both great and made a wonderful meal on National Hotdog day!
