Vera’s Burger Shack, Pitt Meadows
J and I decided to get up and get out of the house early (ish) on Sunday to run errands so that we could be home in time to enjoy a Sunday to ourselves. After poking around a few different stores J was ready for lunch. I didn’t really realize it but I too was starting to get hungry. My original plan was to go home and make lunch but going grocery shopping on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster because we both get cranky and will want to buy everything in sight. We noticed Vera’s Burger shack in the plaza and decided to walk over there and grab some lunch.
This was my first time at Vera’s and upon walking in I noticed it looked like your usual fast food joints. Food orders are taken at the counter, and small tables around the rest of the room. They do however have a liquor licence and a couple of big screens which was kind of fun but personally if I want to catch a game I would probably go to a pub with comfortable seating, a wider variety of food, and no kids crying about their hotdogs.
I ordered the Baja burger, which was a single patty, salsa, guacamole, cheese, and hot peppers. I also added lettuce, tomato and mayo at the counter as per the cashier’s suggestion. The burgers come wrapped up and placed in a basket. When I unwrapped the little burger package I noticed that the cheese was just shredded cheese and wasn’t even melted. I did see that there was a good amount of guac but I didn’t really see any salsa at all nor did I taste it when I was eating it. There were probably only one or two yellow hot peppers that really weren’t that hot. The flavour of the meat was decent but didn’t taste fresh and was probably a frozen patty. It was a little greasy but the bun was pretty dry so it sort of evened out.
J ordered the BBQ, which was a single patty, provolone, bacon, friend onions, and BBQ sauce. He also added lettuce tomato and mayo. He tried to also order the mustard and relish but the cashier said that it wouldn’t taste as good and the relish would get lost in the taste of the BBQ sauce, she was probably right. We also ordered a side of fried as well with J’s which was HUGE! I preferred J’s burger because you could taste all the elements and the bacon and onions made the bun a little moister then my burger. You really can’t go wrong with a BBQ style burger, but for 8.69 (for just the burger, no fries) I am not sure that it’s worth it. Again, I would rather go to a pub if I am going to pay that much.
The fries were were cooked well and had a nice soft potato center. They did get a little soggy by the end but we also loaded them with malt vinegar so it was hard to tell what was causing the sogginess.
The amount of food served was more than enough for J and I but for only one combo and a second burger for 25.00 I wasn’t overly impressed. These weren’t really gourmet burgers and not worth that price in my opinion. If they cost a little less it might be worth going back to but if I want a burger that’s a step up from “fast food” I think I will stick to Triple O’s.

I agree! Not worth the price. However, I would have paid tons more if the original shack in Dunderave (West Vancouver) made the burgers. I had the original made by “Veras” family in the 1980′s to early 1990′s. I have never tasted any burger better then that concession stand. THose were the best bugers ever… now they are mass produced frozen and I will never but from Veras again. Very disappointed
